What's the Buzz about Dynamic T1 Lines?

A few years ago, the name of the Internet technology game was speed. Bandwidth became the new catchphrase for increasing business productivity. Increased bandwidth meant increased data throughput. A simple phone line was no longer enough to conduct business in the Internet age.

T1s became the business tool of the day. A T1 line consists of 24 individual channels, each of which supports 64Kbits per second. Now T1 connections are commonplace in the business world.

Here's the rub: each T1 is dedicated to carry either voice or data. While the data channels may always be in use, the bandwidth on the voice lines often sits idle. Unlike your electricity meter or long-distance rates, you're charged a fixed rate even when that zippy T1 bandwidth isn't in use. Small- and medium-sized businesses, or businesses with several locations, feel the pinch between the need for more bandwidth dedicated to data applications and a tight budget.

Enter dynamic T1 bandwidth technology. This innovative technology enables a single T1 to carry both voice and data. When the bandwidth allocated for voice isn't in use, it's allocated for data. These periods of bandwidth reallocation are referred to as "bursts." New dynamic technologies even take advantage of the short silences during normal conversations, upping the data bandwidth oomph for those few seconds.
