Krispy Kreme Effectively Keeps Up With Doughnut Demands, Bandwidth and Productivity Increases

For most people, Krispy Kreme conjures up visions of a Hot Original Glazed doughnuts that make their mouth water. For Sam Gray, director of technical services at Krispy Kreme, finding a solution for the company communications infrastructures that could no longer handle ballooning data requirements at acceptable costs was critical. Gray needed services that would economically deploy large capacity network services along with faster applications response times. The company also needed to develop a more flexible disaster recovery solution.

"The Time Warner Telecom Switched Native LAN (SNLAN) service delivers 100 megabits per second and links between our three major facilities in North Carolina," said Gray. "That represents a substantial bandwidth upgrade for us at about half the cost of alternative solutions. That's a great value proposition."

Time Warner Telecom provided the solution. Krispy Kreme's communication infrastructure is effectively a metro LAN between their discrete headquarters, manufacturing and distribution facilities. The manufacturing facility produces equipment used in franchise and company stores. Krispy Kreme currently operates 375 factory stores in the United States, Australia, Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom. In the distribution facility, employees use in-house SQL applications to route supplies to retail stores.

In addition to the bandwidth upgrade, the SNLAN connections deliver the reliability and bandwidth necessary to implement a distributed disaster recovery solution that utilizes data replication, a key enabler for data protection.

Gray is also quite pleased with the performance enhancements to their web-based applications since using Time Warner Telecom's 10 Mbps Ethernet Internet service. Gray stated "It has increased employee productivity overall," referring to applications that now run better and faster over the headquarters' Internet connection over the SNLAN service.

Time Warner Telecom can provide complete network solutions to meet the extremely large capacity requirements like Krispy Kreme and other high tech customers because of extensive local fiber networks. The local fiber network that supplies Krispy Kreme in Winston-Salem is part of a nearly 500 route mile network that also serves several cities in North Carolina. Time Warner Telecom's extensive local fiber networks in North Carolina are connected with regional fiber networks to offer unsurpassed state-wide network services.

"Corporate customers, like Krispy Kreme, have a strong demand for reliable metro LAN services," said Travis Noble, vice president and general manager for Time Warner Telecom in Greensboro. "They need to be able to upgrade their communications infrastructures to meet mushrooming data requirements while containing costs. Our scalable 100Mbps Ethernet SNLAN service fits the bill for these types of companies."
