Vessel Trips Offer Internal Cohesion

Hornbeck Offshore strives to be the "Company of Choice" for our customers and our employees. While the vast majority of our employees work on our vessels and are in the front line of delivering service to our customers, we have many support positions in our shoreside locations.

Shore Side Vessel Trip Program

A core belief at Hornbeck Offshore is that in order to deliver a superior product, the whole team, even the shoreside support team, need to understand the service we deliver. While many of our shoreside employees began as sailors on our vessels, those who didn’t can learn more about our business by taking advantage of the Shoreside Vessel Trip Program.

Every shoreside employee at Hornbeck Offshore is expected to take one trip per year on our boats. It is the company's desire that each employee develop a basic understanding of our business, be they administrators, IT professionals, accountants or any other staff employee on the team. Normally the trips last a night or two and easily fit into our work schedules.

Sue and Mary Jane
Sue Prechter is a Vessel Payroll Administrator for Hornbeck Offshore and Mary Jane Hornaday is the Receptionist. One afternoon in late October 2007, they boarded the HOS VOYAGER, a 220 foot new generation, offshore supply vessel (OSV) and headed for the Hercules Rig 21 at Main Pass 30 in the Gulf of Mexico for their 2007 vessel ride. Just after dawn on November 1 and 110 miles from land, they arrived at the destination.

The HOS VOYAGER was loaded with mud, bayrite, cement potable and fresh water. A portion of the mud was offloaded and then, at the customer’s request, the HOS VOYAGER went into a "stand-by" pattern while waiting for the rig to need the remaining cargo. The vessel serviced the rig for the next several days. Sue and Mary Jane were able to return to land via another boat while the HOS VOYAGER continued to service the rig.

“My trip highlight was being exposed to the drilling process,” said Sue. “When we were sitting off the rig, I could see them putting down pipe and casing. Captain O.D. Gibbs, the HOS VOYAGER captain, explained to us what was happening, and it was totally fascinating.”

Mary Jane and Sue were able to experience the camaraderie of the crew and witness crew life. Additionally, they saw all the challenges the crew faces to make sure superior service is provided to the customer.

Service, Hornbeck Style
Both Mary Jane and Sue were able to see and experience things they had only heard and read about. The rig that the company was servicing was about 80 feet off the water, and is about the size of the entire Hornbeck office building.

Throughout the weather patterns, the rig called the HOS VOYAGER to offload small amounts of mud and cargo. The boat was there in a moment's notice to fulfill the customer needs.

“It was an incredible opportunity to see first hand how our company transports materials for oil and gas exploration,” said Mary Jane.

Through personal experiences, every employee of Hornbeck knows what it takes to provide the quality service and customer commitment that makes Hornbeck the company of choice.
