Should I Include Bylines in My eNewsletter?

Writing with feather quillQ. Should I include bylines with my eNewsletter articles?

A. The answer depends on whether you want the article to appear to come from your organization as a whole.

DO use bylines when someone else contributes to your article and acknowledgement is due by prefacing the name of a contributor with "by."

DON'T use bylines when the article speaks for the entire organization and a more corporate and formal-minded message is called for.

If you use a byline, it shouldn't directly compete with the headline or detract from the body copy. When using bylines:

  • Use a smaller font size and/or style to separate them from headline and other nearby elements.
  • Preface the byline with "By" or "Photographed by" or "Illustrated by."
  • Further defer attention to the headline by starting the byline with an em dash, tilde or bullet.

Regardless of your byline choice, make sure your message comes through loud and clear. Our experts can help. Contact Proven Systems at (800) 720-5398 or info@provensystems.com to learn more.
